JUDGE: Mrs Ann O'Keefe (NSW) (Glenayden Kennels)
BEST IN SHOW WINNER

CH Lochranza Gold Dust Among Pencandy (Crocker)
Firstly I would like to thank the Cocker Spaniel Club of Queensland for the opportunity to judge your lovely cockers which I really enjoyed. To all the Committee members and workers behind the scenes it was a lovely show and you need to be complimented on the trophy table which looked fantastic. The accommodation was excellent and special thanks must go to Tim Thomas and his mum for picking me up from the airport and taking us to our Motel and then on to the show and then home again. Jan McGregor also needs a special mention as my steward she did an excellent job and kept things moving - thank you Jan. I also enjoyed the light super it was just enough and all tasted great thank you to all who added to the menu to make it interesting. My gift was also enjoyed while back at home reading the catalogue sitting up in bed. Toni Dennis took some great photos of the winners which is great for the club records and for me to reflect my night after the event.
Finally to all the exhibitors that came and accepted their awards in a sportsman fashion thank you, in some cases it is hard to place as there is little between the exhibits but place we must and it is appreciated how well you all took my decisions - I loved my winners and tried to find cockers that fitted how I understand the standard and of course the finer things that are important to me - we all differ slightly with what makes a cocker that bit special to us all. A couple of things we all need to pay attention to is trimming, I know time sometimes makes us take short cuts but the use of clippers on the head is for me unacceptable, it ruins the expression and is the first thing a judge sees on approach. The other thing that I found concerning was the use of choker leads on young babies - they have plenty of time to grow up let them be babies nobody will worry if they play up a little let them learn to love showing and make it fun we need our cockers to be merry as this is also a MUST HAVE in our breed so please be patient and let a baby have fun first you will end up with a merrier longer lasting show dog.
My critique is as follows, I judged them honestly and as I found the exhibits on the night and placed accordingly - thanks again for your entry:
Baby Puppy Dog (4 entries)

1. Cobalt The Informer (S Bruno)
Promising youngster with a lovely head piece, good bone, short back with good spring of rib with a deep body and strong top line - the youngest in the class but one that appealed for his overall type, naughty but a typical cocker baby - liked him a lot hope he goes on.
2. Sagapore Ice Age (M Hannan)
Another promising baby head not as masculine as my winner nor the bone but still a short boy with great ribs, deep body and correct top line good type - would prefer he was not shown on a choker, let him be a baby at least while in baby class.
3. Manunga Heaven Help Us (Sticher/ Ugrinic)
Lovely headed baby, kind expression, good bone longer cast than my first and second, good rib and sound mover good type also lovely coat.

Solid black and white boy, pleasing head and expression short and deep body, good ribs, showed happily and merrily a bit unsettled moving but won the class because he was cockery.
2. Ayrshire Earl Spencer (I & T Young)
A brother to the winner I see, slighter make and shape, still of good type, not the head of the winner, short dog with reasonable rib for age, balanced front and back, happy mover.
3. Watervaal Rythem N Blues (G Hansen)
Longer cast blue boy than first and second reasonable head, not as well angled through his front, good rib with deep body, lost his top line on the move but happy boy and handled well by his young handler.

Black dog in lovely condition, lovely head and expression, quality bone and feet, good spring of rib, bigger boy than my winner, top line not as strong but may settle with age, adequate quarters and reasonable mover again in lovely condition and handled well.
3. Sagapore Living Faith (D Thomas)
Finer boy all over than my first and second places, expression not as pleasing, short boy with good top line, well up on leg, moved okay would prefer his preparation to be softer would make the overall picture more appealing.

Light blue dog of rangier type, pleasing head and expression, lacked angles front and rear, good bone, top line okay and tail set, moved soundly and merry.

Blue dog with pleasing head which could be softened more if not clipped so closely, lacked front angulation, good rib, short loin, correct top line with adequate quarters moved fast with flash I would prefer him slower and more cockery.
